(The Leader)

“Sanford and Son: The First Season” (1971/1972, Not Rated, 364 minutes) available from Columbia/TriStar Home Entertainment

Stars: Redd Foxx and Demond Wilson

Plot: The first season of the show introduces us to Fred “Pop” Sanford (Foxx) and his son Lamont “Dummy” Sanford (Wilson) as they operate their junkyard business in South Central Los Angeles.

Features: The Two-Disc set contains all 14 episodes from the show’s hit first season, a Collectible Episode Guide with Cast and Crew information, English and Spanish Subtitles, and Episode Selections.

Bonus: “Sanford and Son” was the most popular show on NBC for the first four of the show’s five-season run (1972-1977). The show earned seven Emmy nominations and won star Redd Foxx the Golden Globe for Best Performance by an Actor in a Series – Musical/Comedy in 1973, for the show’s first season.

Final Word: Norman Lear struck television gold again with this rollicking funny series. Foxx knew he had the part of his career and played it for everything it was worth plus some. He’s perfectly matched with Wilson whose comic timing is the show’s secret weapon. They just don’t make television?comedy series, anyway?like “Sanford and Son” and “The Jeffersons” anymore!
