My Louisiana Sky
July 31, 2002
My Louisiana Sky (2001, Not Rated, 99 minutes) available from Showtime Home Entertainment
Stars: Kelsey Keel, Juliette Lewis, Shirley Knight, Amelia Campbell, Chris Owens, Karen Robinson, and Michael Cera
Plot: A 12-year-old girl (Keel) re-evaluates her relationship with her developmentally disabled parents (Campbell and Owens).
Features: Cast Biographies, Other Titles of Interest-Previews of 5 other Showtime Original Movies For All Ages, and a Weblink to SHO.com.
Final Word: Based on a book by Kimberly Willis Holt and directed with panache by actor Adam Arkin (“Chicago Hope”), My Louisiana Sky movingly depicts the difference between the love of family (however complicated) and the desire for approval. The film boasts a number of solid performances, though none as memorable as Keel’s, who won a Daytime Emmy (Outstanding Performer in a Children’s Special) for her work here. The telefilm was nominated for five Daytime Emmys overall, and won three, including Outstanding Children’s Special and Outstanding Directing in a Children’s Special for Arkin.
Rating: 3 briefs (out of 5)
