A roofer for Santa Ana-based Allied Roofing Co. was injured late Wednesday morning when he was pinned against a wall by a hot tar kettle with which he was working with outside the Sierra Nevada building near the entrance to the cafeteria.
Albino Martinez, 55 of Los Angeles, was injured when the truck that was towing the kettle broke loose, causing it to roll backward, striking Martinez.
“He had injured his upper left leg,” said co-worker Alfredo Cachu, pointing to the area where Martinez was struck.
According to paramedics, the kettle did not sever any arteries or crush Martinez’s leg,. He was taken to Verdugo Hills Hospital.
The accident occurred near the entrance to the north gym across from the bookstore at about 11 a.m.
“Workers were on their way to conduct repairs to the roof of the north gym when the accident occurred,” said Vice President of Business Services Bill Taylor.
Glendale Community College police cordoned off the scene after the accident.
