If students have ever wanted to wail at teachers and classmates, the opportunity approaches with Glendale College’s first Battle of the Bands.
BOB was conceived a year ago at a meeting of the Scholars Program General Assembly. Jodi Matz, a cabinet officer and vice president of the BOB’s communications committee, had attended battles in her native East Coast and proposed the fund-raiser.
“We always try to think of ways to raise money for scholarships,” said Scholars director Gary Massion. “This would be more creative — [than] carwashes.” To the best of Massion’s and Matz’s knowledge, no such event has been held on campus before.
Planning took hold immediately after the Assembly meeting, and over the past three weeks the most intense development has taken place. Duties would come to include securing judges to deciding prizes, like Virgin Megastore gift certificates.
To promote the event, the communications committee canvassed the greater Glendale area with flyers, covering GCC, other community colleges, high schools, and local malls.
Refreshments including baked goods will be on sale.
Planning the profits strategy, Matz remembered 10 years ago that the going rate for band
