Numerous Women’s Tennis Players Given Honorable Mention

The Vaquero women’s tennis team has ended their season as well as their competition in various tournaments with many awards to show for their performance.

In singles, Alicen Ostach was given honorable mention. The doubles team of Cindy Gomez and Felicia Masto, and Natasha Badkoubei and Anna Babaian, and Ostach and Emily Halladay were also given honorable mention in doubles.

In the Annual Ojai Tournament held in Ojai on April 24-27, Badkoubei was knocked out of competition in the first round by Jessica Button from Cerritos College, 0-6, 2-6. Gomez competed against Grit Schneider and lost 6-4, 4-6, 4-6.

The squad also played in the Southern California Regional Tournament, which was held on May 1-5 in Cuesta College.

Gomez represented the Vaqueros in singles and played her first round against Sayaka Fukumoto. Gomez lost the match in straight sets 1-6, 2-6.
Despite their efforts, the squad was not able to qualify for the State Championship Tournament. Thus, with the end of the Regional Tournament, the squad’s season has come to an end.

Regarding the season Coach Terry Coblentz said, “Throughout the year we’ve gotten better and better. The team’s placement and performance were great.”

Coach Coblentz is quite pleased with the team’s overall efforts and performance. Although this season’s team was extremely inexperienced, they were able to represent GCC at Regionals and in Ojai.

Coblentz is looking forward to next season, with half of the team returning. Gomez, Halladay, and Babaian are the top returners.

“I’m very proud of this season’s team,” said Coblentz, “With many of the players returning, I’m looking forward to working on what we have built up this year.”
