Free Throws Prove to be Invaluable

The Vaqueros won 78-72
against a tough Santa
Monica team on Wednesday.
Jerniece Johnson led the
scoring for GCC with 30
points and had a team high 17
rebounds. The Vaqueros had a
great day on the free-throw
line shooting 19-26 and
especially good down the
stretch.

Kegley had a great all
around game with 23 points, 3
steals, 5 assists, 3 block shots
and was 6 for 6 from the freethrow
line.

After the 2 point loss
against Santa Monica on Jan.

16, the Vaqueros wanted this
win. “We controlled the
tempo of the game and ran the
floor unlike the last time we
played this team” said coach
Dyan Miller.

GCC led by as many as 15
points during the second half
but Santa Monica cut it down
to as low as 4 points with less
than four minutes left in the
game. But the Vaqueros freethrows
kept on dropping, “I
told the team we weren’t
going to miss any free-throws
in the second half and we
didn’t,” said coach Miller.

This team has worked very
hard to improve and with only
one player not being a
freshmen was very hard to
find leaders but the team kept
on working together and came
away with a lot of wins.

“When the season started I
had a bunch of athletes but
now I have basketball
players,” said coach Miller.
