After a three game losing streak to Bakersfield College in early April, the men’s baseball team has since returned to its original high level of performance, winning 8 of 9 games, including a 27-8 win over Canyons College on April 26.
They scored two runs in the second inning on Andrew Garcia’s hit to right field, and added two more runs in the fourth inning on single home runs by Jaden Rez and Gabe Juarez. From there, GCC gained momentum and added nine more runs in the sixth inning, including a grand slam home run by Ethan Pena. The momentum continued as they scored six in the 7th, two in the 8th, and six in the 9th for a total of 27 runs in the win.
They have been scoring a lot of runs lately, and their batting lineup has been in great form. They hit a total of nine home runs in this game, and their offensive ability, which is their strong point, is outstanding. “As we practice more and more, our offensive lineup is getting better together,” said Ethan Pena who has hit a team high eight home runs. In recent games, the lineup’s coordination has been remarkable, Pena said. The team has been able to advance the bases with single hits and stolen bases, and score a lot of runs with long hits.
The team stumbled a bit in the early part of the season, but they were able to turn things around in the late season and advance to the playoffs. “We must not be complacent just because we have a good record. Now we have to focus on the playoffs,” said Pena.
