On the weekend of Jan. 30, the Lady Vaqs took the field sporting their white uniforms with a patch, ironed on over their hearts. It read, “Coach Hawk,” for fallen Glendale softball coach Dave “Hawk” Wilder.
Coach Wilder was the softball coach at GCC for 13 seasons until his death in June of 2013. In honor of coach Hawk, Glendale hosts an annual tournament every year at the Glendale Sports Complex called the, Dave “Hawk” Wilder Softball Tournament.
12 teams, including one from Arizona, got together for two days of softball action. Glendale split the tournament with two wins and two losses.
The Lady Vaqs faced the Victor Valley Rams in a 9-2 two victory on Friday in the first of a same day set of games. Later that night, the Glendale toughed out a 3-1 win to cap off perfect first day of tournament action.
On Saturday, GCC took on Rio Hondo. Despite a great effort, the Lady Vaqs dropped the first of two Saturday games by a score of 10-7. Later that evening, GCC suffered a 10-0 loss to the Santiago Canyon Hawks to put their tournament record to 2-2 and 3-2 overall.
