On beautiful day with temps in the 70s the Lady Vaqueros took second place, while the men placed sixth in the Southern California Cross Country Championship Finals held at East Mission Bay Park, San Diego on Nov. 6.
On the downside the Glendale womens team which has dominated the SoCal Championships for the last five years running, was finally knocked out of the top position by Southwestern.
Southwestern placed a previously unheard of five runners in the top 7 spots to finish with a score of 22.
Glendale sophomore Brianna Jauregui led the Lady Vaqs placing ninth with a time of 19:33. In 12th and 13th place were Diana Sanchez (19:44) and Angela Martinez (19:46) respectively.
Rounding out the Lady Vaqueros were Cecilia Nicolas 15th @ 19:51; Keri Molt 19th @ 19:58; Vivian Ochoa 22nd @ 20:00 and Alyssa Selve 27th @ 20:08. This was in a total field of 194 competitors.
For the men sophomore Rico Gutierrez led the Vaqueros finishing sixth (20:50), Ricky Avila 13th @ 21:04; Nick Marquez 49th @ 22:07; Neil Jones 51st @ 22:09; Michel Noris 62nd @ 22:17; Miguel Flores (22:28) and Erick Lopez (22:34) completed the mens team. The Glendale men finished 6th with an overall score of 181.
According to GoCollegeTrack.com out of the 14 teams in each class (men/women) the final ranking of the season for SoCal places the Glendale women in second place and the men in fifth.
The final event of the season is the California State Championships to be held this Saturday in Fresno.
