Track and Field Headed for State Meet Next Weekend

After competing in the Southern California Championship Finals at Saddleback College last Saturday, a host of top men and women qualified for the State Championships Friday and Saturday in Antelope Valley.

Samantha Bogatz, a sophomore sprinting sensation, was once again on top of her game taking first place in two events starting with the women’s 100 meters in 11.85, one of her best times of the year. Bogatz then proceeded to break her own school record again in the women’s 200-meter in 24.09 – besting the record she set last week in the Southern California Prelims of 24.23. Her best time coming into this season was 24.32.

Bogatz was also one quarter of the women’s 4 x 100 meter relay team, along with Alin Jabourian, Carissa Porter and Daniela Pollard that finished fourth in 47.97.

In the women’s 5,000-meter final, Nina Moore finished third in 17:51.2, followed by Rosa Del Toro in fourth at 17:54.68 and Karen Rosas was sixth at 18:00.29.

In the women’s 10,000-meter Karen Rosas finish third to qualify for state with a time of 36:43.97.

In the women’s 1,500-meter, Rosa Del Toro finished fourth in 4:44.56 and Nina Moore was sixth in 4:47.82.

The final qualifier for state for the Lady Vaqueros in the women’s 3,000-meter steeplechase was Angelina Gonzalez in sixth place with 11:26.82, her personal best time this season. In the team competition, the Glendale women finished in fifth place with 60 points behind meet winner Mt. San Antonio College with 119 points.

For the men, Jonathan Alpizar finished second, a personal best time of 9:19.43 in the men’s 3,000 meter steeplechase and Francisco Quijada (15:17.25) grabbed third in the men’s 5,000 meters in 15:17.25. The men finished 13th in team competition with 17 points.

The Vaquero’s travel to Antelope Valley College for the State finals Friday at 10 a.m. and Saturday at noon.
