Rough Riders Power Soccer Brings Home Fast-Paced New Sport

The Rough Riders, Glendale’s power soccer team, lost the first exhibition game 4-0 but battled back to tie the second game 1-1 against the Santa Barbara Rollin’ Gauchos on Saturday at the Verdugo Gym.

In the first game, Kyle Colton shined for the Gauchos with two goals and one assist in leading his team to the victory.

Billy Balles had one goal and one assist for Santa Barbara. Team captain Joey Wells came close to scoring for the Rough Riders but the Gauchos goal-tending and defense was too tough.

“It’s only a scrimmage, but they’re experienced,” said Benny Aviles of the Rough Riders, who would end up being a key player later on.

In the second game, Wells scored right away to give the Rough Riders the lead 1-0.
There was a slower pace due to the improved Glendale defense as they were able to shut down the Gauchos in the first half.

Unfortunately, Balles and Colton teamed up to tie the game in the second half 1-1. Aviles, with his quick defense and goal-tending kept the game tied until it ended.
It was all good spirits after the second game for Glendale.

The Rough Riders have only been together about seven months and the Rollin’ Gauchos for a few years, so Glendale was proud to compete on the same level.

“We’re practicing to go to the regionals,” said team leader Jorge Acevedo. “Everyone disabled can compete. We want students to know it can be done and we are the first team in So-Cal. I even got the cheerleaders to come.”

The Gauchos drove an hour and a half to Glendale to compete, demonstrating their commitment and passion for the game.

“It’s my third year playing and it takes precision passing to win,” said Balles, describing his experience and what it takes to win.

A Rough Rider power soccer donation account has been set up to aid the team. The costs for transportation, league fees and the much-needed equipment are expensive.
