The Lady Vaqueros women’s tennis team lost its first match of the 2008 season Feb. 26 against Bakersfield with a final score of 6-3, at GCC.
The match consisted of six singles and three doubles. The Lady Vaqueros lost all but one of the singles with Sonya Rodriguez winning with scores of 7-5 and 6-3.
Monique Palmera won the first round in her singles match with a score of 6-1, but lost in the following two sets with scores of 0-6 and 4-6.
Meldia Hacobian also won her first round 7-5, but lost the following two sets with scores of 2-6 and 3-6.
Miyuki Yohoguha won her first round 6-3, but lost her following two sets with scores of 4-6 and 6-7.
Armine Balayan lost both of the sets in her match with scores of 3-6 and 1-6.
Ani Petrasyan lost her match with both sets ending 0-6.
The Lady Vaqueros won two of the doubles. Palmeca and Hacobian won their doubles match, 8-6. Yohoguha and Rodriguez also won their doubles match, 8-5. Balayan and Petrasyan however lost their doubles match, 3-8.
While The Lady Vaqueros tried their best, they were ultimately outplayed by Bakersfield.
“It’s very early in the season, and our practices are going to revolve around pressure points,” said head coach Terry Coblentz.
When asked about how the team could improve in the future, Palmeca said, “I think the team is pretty steady right now. With practice we’ll get better.”
