The Lady Vaqueros defeated Bakersfield College 6-3 at home in a Western State Conference game last Thursday, improving their record to 3-3 on the season.
In the doubles match, Glendale’s Jennifer Chung (1) and Maria Bagaforo (2) played a solid match against Amy Cowan and Jennifer Kelly, tieing the score at 8-8, but eventually lost the tiebreaker 7-9.
“Everytime our ones’s [Jung] and two’s [Bagaforo] go, they have a tough match,” said Coach Terry Coblentz, “They never gave up, and they fought against one of the tough teams in our conference. So we have to give them credit for working hard.”
GCC’s Miyuki Yokozuka (3) and Sonia Rodriguez (4) defeated Bakersfield’s Leia Perkins and Roneva Monreal 8-3. Nancy Bogado (5) and Zaria Rojas (6) won their match 8-5.
“We had a great day,” said Coblentz.
For the singles, Chung lost her match 3-6, 2-6 and Bagaforo also lost both of her sets 3-6.
Glendale’s Yokozuka defeated Perkins, winning both her sets 6-2. Bogado defeated Bakersfields’ Brittany Owens 6-1, 6-1. Rojas won her match against BC’s Ruth Kresha 6-0, 6-1.
“We’re a great team,” said Jung, “because we always [work hard] and it doesn’t matter what happens on the court because we know we gave all-out effort.”
“We bonded well and we stick together no matter what.”
“I’m very, very proud of the women athletes,” Coblentz said.
“And [I am] extremely proud of how they are working, whether they win or lose.”
