An investigation is underway to determine the cause and extent of the security breach that put many GCC services offline starting Nov. 10. It has been revealed that the incident was a ransomware attack, according to the college. Ransomware is a type of malware that encrypts files, leaving them and the systems that use them inoperative. Details of the attack are still being investigated.
As of now, it is unclear if any personal information has been taken from the system, but the college will provide updates on that to affected parties as it finds out more information.
While the college looks into the security threat, it has made strides toward helping faculty and students access Canvas again. A new server access was made available, and instructions for a password reset were emailed out, which enabled many students to regain access to Canvas. Currently, the college is working on fixing a firewall communication issue and will send out messages when that is cleared up.
Priority registration has been delayed because of the incident. However, students who have priority registration will continue to have it, and new dates will be provided for that. Additionally, an upcoming drop deadline on Saturday will also be rescheduled.
The incident is still undergoing investigation, and updates will be provided as more information emerges.
