Latinx Heritage Month 2021
Attending Latinx Heritage Month events is a great way to learn about people from the Latinx community and their struggles. Latinx Heritage Month launched Sept. 15 and will run through Oct. 15. During Latinx Heritage Month, 12 events are being held. There are a variety of different events that can be interesting to all groups of people. The events include live Mariachi music, poetry performances, storytelling, and guest speakers.
On Wednesday, Sept. 15, participants could enjoy a performance by the “Mariachi Arcoiris de Los Angeles: The World’s First LGBTQ+ Mariachi.” As you can probably tell by the name of the title, this is a very inclusive Mariachi group which is rare to find. The group’s music puts an emphasis on unity within the Latinx community.
The next event for Latinx Heritage Month is on Tuesday, Sept. 28, 2021. This event will center around a discussion about Afro-Latinx Beauty & Representation. The conversation will include discussing experiences with beauty in the Latinx community and other issues such as fighting anti-blackness. This event aims to inspire people within the Latinx community to create businesses and spaces that cater to Afro-Latinx beauty.
Another event during Latinx Heritage Month you don’t want to miss is on Thursday, Sept. 30 from 5:00-6:00 p.m.. This event is presented by Antonio Castellanos, who will discuss how storytelling can help put an end to homophobia. He will also be discussing how members of the LGBTQ+ community have made an impact on Mexico. Those in attendance, “will also be able to see unpublished Joteria art from [Castellanos’s] soon coming Second Edition of Joteria,” Castellanos said..
Most events will take place from 5:00-6:00 p.m. to accomodate students with busy schedules or who may be working and may want to stop by for one of the events. Make sure to mark your calendars for Latinx Heritage Month events!
