Deirdre Collins, a five-year mathematics instructor at GCC, died this past weekend. Collins had been lingering in a coma since undergoing emergency heart surgery in early April.
Collins joined the full-time faculty in the mathematics division in
2001, having served as mathematics department chair at Victor Valley Community College.
“She was deeply committed to the success of all students, even pursuing extensive formal education in the area of learning disabilities,” wrote Vice President of Instructional Services Steve White in a campus-wide e-mail to faculty and staff on Wednesday.
During her five years at GCC, Collins was involved in a wide range of professional activities, these include serving on the Academic Senate, the Program Review Committee and the Assessment Committee. She was member of the Board of Governors, a treasurer of the Faculty Association of California Community Colleges and co-coordinator of the Mathematics Collaborative with area high schools.
“Deirdre’s passing will be deeply felt by her students and colleagues at GCC,” wrote White.
Memorial services for Collins will be held Sept. 9 at Pasadena Presbyterian Church beginning at 12:34 p.m.
“Deirdre’s favorite time,” wrote White.
