GCC students were given the opportunity to gain information and sneak a peek into 64 different campuses around the country at the Transfer Fair on Oct. 31 at Plaza Vaquero.

Representatives offered students a chance to ask questions and receive one-on-one advice. Schools recommended procedures for writing personal statements and gave advice on applying for scholarships.
The colleges and universities provided catalogs explaining the admission process as a transfer student, class sizes, costs and financial assistance for each specific campus. Other brochures focused on housing options and covering residence halls that come with meal plans, campus apartments and family student housing for those students with families.

There were representatives from private, out of state universities, UC and Cal State campuses. Some of the universities present included UCLA, UC Berkeley, UC Davis, UC Irvine, UC Riverside, UC Santa Barbara, UC San Diego, Azusa Pacific University, Biola University, Caltech, FIDM, Loyola Marymount University, Loma Linda University, Mount St. Mary’s College and Seminary, Northern Michigan College, Pacific Oaks College and Woodbury College.

University of Judaism Representative Andrea Harris said, “What we want is to get our name out. Most students have never heard about us and ask where we are located. Students usually think we are a religious school, and that is not what we are all about.”

“The students today have been asking about their specific majors, especially business,” said UC Riverside representative Shawna Elliot. “My goal personally is to recruit as many people as I possibly can by telling them that we are the best.”

The Transfer Fair allowed students to observe what each university had to offer in an efficient way.
“The fair is really great and the representatives were really friendly and had good information for the students,” said student Alisha Ales. “The first school I went to talk to was LMU because I want to transfer there the most.”

Another student, Maggie Kirikian, said, “I liked the variety of schools and today I saw schools that I haven’t ever heard of; but I do wish they stayed longer.”
