A brush fire burned about 1,100 acres in the foothills north of the Brand Library on Monday forcing the city of Glendale to declare a local state of emergency.
Smoke billowing from the 11:45 a.m. blaze could be seen from Glendale Community College about four miles away. It extended over north Glendale into the Montrose and La Crescenta area. Smoke could also be seen as far away as Pasadena to the east and Sherman Oaks to the west.
At least 33 homes were evacuated in a precautionary evacuation along the Glendale-Burbank border when the blaze took a westward direction. The fire later turned north toward the Verdugo Mountains summit. Residents from Glendale were evacuated to Brand Park, and Burbank residents were evacuated to McCambridge Park. However, residents who live in Glendale along Thurber Street and in Burbank along Via Alta were able to return to their homes later in the afternoon, and residents in La Crescenta along Whiting Woods Drive were also allowed to return to their homes.
A state of emergency was declared when Glendale Fire Department resources became overwhelmed. Declaring a local state of emergency allowed Glendale officials to call upon the state and federal government for assistance.
Glendale and Burbank firefighters worked through Monday night putting out the blaze, which by dusk was 30 percent contained, but by Wednesday morning was 70 percent contained. The fire was sparked in a wilderness section of Brand Park north of Mountain Street and Grandview Avenue.
A firefighter was injured overnight Monday with heat-related imjuires, and a police officer was struck by a driver as the officer was redirecting traffice around a barricaded area. Both were treated and released.
About 600 firefighters responded to the call, including firefighters from Orange County, and six water-dropping helicopters, airplanes dropping retardant and several Super Scoopers were used to contain the blaze. Firefighters from Compton, Montebello, El Segundo and Los Angeles County were also on the scene.
High temperatures combined with low humidity are expected Tuesday afternoon.
The cause of the fire was still under investigation Monday night.
