Former Business Division Chair, Bob Unterman died Aug. 19 after a long battle with a debilitating neurological disorder that kept him away from GCC for three semesters.
Unterman, 52, served in the business division from 1977 to 1999. He started as a full-time accounting/business administration instructor in the fall of 1977. He taught accounting, finance and business law courses until March of 2000 when he went on disability leave because of his illness. He was elected business division chair in 1999 and served from August 1999 to January 2000 until his health took a turn for the worse.
Current business division chair Linda Serra said that Unterman was a very health-conscious person; he ran five miles everyday and followed a healthy diet.
“It was so sad to see his health deteriorate, because he was trying so hard to do the job well and continue teaching his classes,” said Serra. “He loved to teach, and his students loved him. He was a trooper to the very end, and we will all miss him terribly.”
The memorial service was held on Aug. 22 at Eden Memorial Park in Northridge.
Unterman is survived by his wife, Susan, and his two daughters, Laura and Katy.
A scholarship has been established in Unterman’s memory.
