Imagine an insight into the creative world of the GCC faculty and the mentors that helped shape their artistic talent. The art exhibition appropriately titled “Faculty/faculty” allows GCC students to observe just that through 48 featured displays. The gallery, which opened its doors to the exhibit Wednesday, showcases all aspects of visual art including paintings, photography, ceramics and video.

Each piece tells its own story. Faculty member Nancy Turner presents a 90-piece collage that is titled “Diaspora.” Turner said that it was named for “the expulsion of the Jews from Spain in 1942, but I am using it in a broader way, to include current dispersed individuals.”

The mixed media collage is made up of wax, gold leaf, vintage photographs, pigment, paint, newspaper, rust, wheat, asphaltum and tar. The piece is special in that it can be arranged into several configurations. When the work is fully complete, it will consist of 200 pieces. Turner”s artwork has been sent to Europe, Australia and Israel.

Turner”s mentor, Arlene Raven, a feminist art historian and cofounder of the now defunct Chrysalis magazine, displays a photograph called “Homage to Arlene Raven.” Raven”s book “Crushes Boarders” contained Turner”s work, and Raven encouraged her to keep working.

Other mixed media images include Pasadena City College”s Gallery Director Geoff Allen”s “Bash Theory,” and Mary-Linn Hughes” piece “Untitled,” which documents a series of interviews and portraits with Los Angeles foster children and their parents.

Personal pieces such as Karen Schwenkmeyer”s “Untitled” views a special event such as, “my experience of mothering through representing the messes made by my preschool-age son.”

The gallery will feature many ceramics, including Melody Cooper’s, “Chalkie’s Great Adventure,” Howard Tollefson’s, “Untitled,” Susan Sing’s, “That”s the Way the Cookies Crumbled” and Randall Bruce’s, “Luster US.” Erik Gronborg’s, colorful “America The Beautiful” is the only porcelain piece. The video selection, “I See What You Mean.” by Eileen Cowin, will be shown continuously. The video depicts four images that are constantly looping.

The art gallery is open Monday through Thursday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. and Friday from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., and 5 to 8 p.m. A special reception in honor of the artists will be held Tuesday from 5 to 8 p.m. in the gallery. The “Faculty/faculty” showcase will run until Oct. 8. Admission is free.
