ATTACKS-TERRORALERT:WA–The Bush administration raised its terrorist-warning level Tuesday to Code Orange in light of intelligence about credible new terrorist threats in conjunction with Wednesday’s anniversary of last Sept. 11’s attacks. An al-Qaida operative was among the intelligence sources, said Attorney General John Ashcroft.

Most threats appear focused overseas at U.S. military installations, embassies and other visible symbols of American power. Four U.S. embassies in Southeast Asia, including those in Malaysia and Indonesia, were ordered closed as a safety precaution.

The State Department issued a general alert Monday night warning Americans abroad to be vigilant this week. Vice President Dick Cheney was taken to an undisclosed secure location Monday night.
