Political Parties Announce Sept. 11 Plans
August 14, 2002
Political campaign ads for congressional candidates are one thing TV viewers won’t see among the memorials and ceremonies on Sept. 11.
Republican campaign committees overseeing House and Senate races have announced they’re following Democrats and imposing a moratorium. A spokesman for the National Republican Congressional Committee calls Sept. 11 “a sacred day.” And the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee is considering going further.
The group’s chief says it’s “giving serious consideration” to extending the moratorium a few more days.
But Democrats do plan a 30-second television tribute to victims. The message is expected to closely track the official memorial in New York.
The New York memorial features prominent Republicans, including President George W. Bush, former Mayor Rudolph Giuliani and Gov. George Pataki.
