Classes for Spring

First the bad news: Journalism 107, the magazine writing class, is not going to be offered this spring semester.

Now the good news: Journalism 210 is! We have a whole new class for advanced news writing and those entries will be incorporated into the spring issue of the Insider. Also, Journalism 110, Photojournalism, will be offered for the first time in two years. Here’s what else is happening:

JOURN 102 – 3.00 – REPORTING THE NEWS
Description: JOURN 102 is an introductory course in the gathering and writing of news, features, and editorials. Emphasis on clear and concise written expression with laboratory drill in English fundamentals. Transfer credit: CSU
Recommended preparation: Eligibility for ENGL 101.
Note: Skills expected: Rdg 6 Wrtg 6 Lstng/Spkg 6 Math 1

Description: JOURN 104 is an advanced course in writing news, feature, and editorial copy, copy reading and editing, headline writing, newspaper layout and makeup, and the mechanics of newspaper production. Transfer credit: CSU
Prerequisite: JOURN/MCOMM 102 or JOURN/MCOMM 103.
Note: An interview and consent of the instructor may be required.

JOURN 110 – 3.00 – PHOTOJOURNALISM
Description: JOURN 110 provides instruction in techniques for producing photos for news and feature articles. Students learn effective ways to take photos to accompany articles, as well as to use photos to tell a story of their own. Both conventional and digital photography are used. Transfer credit: CSU
Recommended preparation: JOURN 102, PHOTO 101, and eligibility for ENGL 101.

JOURN 210 – 3.00 – ADVANCED NEWS WRITING
Description: JOURN 210 emphasizes public affairs reporting. Students will cover public meetings both on and off campus, including trials, school board meetings, and city council meetings. They will also contribute to the college newspaper, El Vaquero. Transfer credit: CSU.
Prerequisite: JOURN 102 or equivalent.

Remember to register early – not only does it guarentee you a place in the class, it ensures that the class will not be cancelled. With budget cutbacks, we’ve lost a lot of classes (including JOURN 107) that do not fill quickly.

Jane Pojawa is a Southern California-based print media editor/writer who also dabbles in web design. Her passion is historical research and has served as  a secretary/archivist/historian for the Cabot’s Pueblo Museum board of directors 2008-2010), the communications director for the Friends of the Michael White Adobe (2009 – current) and the media and communications chair for the Morongo Basin Historical Society (2010-current). She writes a a blog for her husband, Raven Jake, and brews mead. She is a past editor-in-chief for El Vaquero 2005-2006, and Spring 2011 and served as the editor-in-chief for the Insider, GCC's student magazine, from 2008 - 2014.
