The Theatre Arts Department at Glendale Community College is set to dazzle audiences this semester with a dynamic lineup of projects and productions that cater to a diverse range of expectations and experiences. Professor Jeanette Farr, the Theatre Arts Department chair, shares insights about the exciting developments in store.
The semester’s centerpiece is the upcoming production of The Importance of Being Earnest – A Trivial Play for Serious People by Oscar Wilde, set to open on Nov. 2 and run through Nov. 12. Farr expressed her anticipation, saying, “I have wanted to produce this for some time, as it is a great example of a classical comedy. Full of mistaken identities and reveals, it is a fun mystery that makes a comment on Victorian society and putting a mirror up to our own.”
Looking ahead to the spring, the department is branching into new territory with a small romantic comedy musical theater piece called I Love You, Because, directed by Jeremy Lewis. Farr mentioned, “We are thrilled to be offering musical theatre to our students and audiences as a part of our season.” This expansion into musical theater will undoubtedly add a refreshing dimension to the department’s offerings.
Also on the horizon for the spring semester is Peter and the Starcatcher, directed by Melody Gunter. Farr highlighted that this play, which revolves around the beloved Peter Pan story, “will be a fun play for all to enjoy.”
Notably, this semester welcomes the expertise of two new faculty members, Melody Gunter and Jeremy Lewis, who have been invaluable additions to the department. “We are a great team that offers specialized skills in acting, directing, technical theatre, movement, and playwriting,” Professor Farr noted. This marks their second year as full-time faculty, and their contributions are already elevating the department’s offerings.
In addition to these exciting productions and faculty expertise, this fall, Martin James will collaborate with students on a devised piece called The Human Masks We Wear, offering a unique platform for students to invest in the creative process. Furthermore, new hire Jason Francescon will lead a devised theater project in the winter session and spring. This commitment to devising theater, as Professor Farr mentioned, was showcased with pride at The Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival through the presentation of What Connects Us.
The Theatre Arts Department’s semester promises an enriching blend of entertainment and educational growth. Stay tuned for these exciting productions and events, and mark your calendars to experience the creativity and talent of the Theatre Arts Department.
