Journalism Students Awarded Scholarships
The Greater Los Angeles Press Club’s 8-Ball Foundation honored three members of the El Vaquero staff with scholarships on Tuesday.
Foundation board member Fernando Del Rio, a retired producer, writer and broadcast personality for KCAL Channel 9 and KRTH radio, presented the awards to editor-in-chief Anahit Kardzhyan, and staff writers Melody Shahsavarani and Nancy Villalobos.
Scholarships are awarded to college students interested in pursuing a career in journalism. The Press Club established the 8-Ball Foundation in 1956 to help out-of-work journalists and their families.
The foundation was established after the original L.A. Daily News shut down, putting more than 100 reporters and writers out of work.
The organization continues to raise money for those in need.
