At Glendale Community College, international students from more than 40 countries find not only a place to study but also a community that supports their dreams.
At the center of that support is Nusha Shishegar, the Senior Coordinator and PDSO for Immigration Advising, Counseling, and Student Support. A role she has dedicated herself to for over two decades.
Shishegar’s journey with international student work began when she was just 17 years old. While she was still a student, she had the opportunity to work as a front desk student assistant in the international student office. That is where her passion for helping students from around the world first began to grow.
“It all started when one of my friends hosted an exchange student from Japan,” Shishegar said. “I loved seeing someone from a completely different country and culture adapting to a new environment. It inspired me to want to help others in that same situation.”
Since then, Shishegar has spent 24 years working in international student support, growing from a student worker into a key figure who helps hundreds of students navigate the complexities of studying abroad in the United States.
Her work goes far beyond paperwork and immigration forms, it’s about guiding students toward their goals. “One of the first things I ask my students is, ‘What’s the end game? What do you want to accomplish?’” she said. “From there, I can help them build a path to get there and make sure they get the most out of their experience.”
Shishegar and the international counseling team at GCC ensure that every international student has access to the information, resources, and support they need.
They help students understand the rules and requirements of studying in the U.S., while also encouraging them to take advantage of every opportunity available, from Curricular Practical Training (CPT)internships to Optional Practical Training (OPT) work programs after graduation.
In addition to individual advising, GCC offers workshops and information sessions designed to help students learn about immigration processes, future opportunities, and how to prepare for professional success. “We want our students to always feel informed and confident,” Shishegar said. “Even during OPT, we are there to help them every step of the way.”
For Shishegar, working with international students is not just a job, it is a lifelong passion that has helped her grow personally and professionally. She deeply admires the courage it takes for students to leave home, adapt to a new culture, and pursue their education abroad.
“International students bring so much value to our campus,” she said. “They open minds, broaden perspectives, and create friendships that cross borders. Diversity is one of the greatest strengths of GCC.”
Her advice for students considering studying in the U.S. is both practical and heartfelt.
“Do your research. Think about where you are in life and what you need to feel comfortable,” Shishegar said. “Look for places that connect you to your culture and where you can find community, like Glendale, which offers access to cultural activities and stores that make you feel at home.”
With professionals like Shishegar leading the way, it’s clear why GCC is known for its welcoming and supportive environment for international students. From application to graduation, and even beyond. GCC ensures that every student has the guidance, care, and opportunities they need to succeed.
