Glendale Community College hosted its annual Transfer Fair on October 28. The event brought dozens of university representatives to campus to connect with students exploring their next academic steps.
Allowing them to explore new university options and more notably learn specifics on school based transfer processes. While meeting representatives, students also received further information on campus lifestyle, planting the seed for students to envision their student life after GCC.
Connecting with student advisor KJ Jennings from California State University of San Bernardino, mentions that it is important for students, at the CSU level, to “complete their golden four courses. Oral communication, Written communication, Mathematics, and Critical Thinking.” Oftentimes, students are missing key courses that schools will turn students away. Although by “connecting with your counselors, or even reaching out to intended schools can better assist your plan.”
Connecting with students exploring tents, first year student Alejandro Hernandez shared that events like this have helped him stay on track as he explores his future educational goals.
“Since I’m at GCC to get my general (education courses) as I learn my true major, it’s nice to get a chance to connect with different schools so that I can start to look into my next steps,” Hernandez said. “Moving into a four year university directly would have hurt my bank, but luckily I’m able to get a good start for a fraction as I discover my major.”
While first year students get an opportunity to explore their options, there are various students on different journeys. For instance, with third year student Jax Margo, who has changed his major once, shared how GCC has helped him.
“GCC allowed me to trial and test what was right for me, luckily I found out sooner,” Margo said. While wrapping up this next quarter, Margo came to the transfer fair so that he could explore which campus is best.
With GCC focusing on creating opportunities, students have an abundance of resources to support their growth both academically and personally. From counselors who help plan student long term goals, learning workshops, and college fairs The Transfer Fair is just one example of how GCC continues to invest in students’ futures by bringing guidance and possibilities directly to campus.
