Every fall, Glendale Community College students come together to create fun, inclusive, and diverse clubs for students to join, showcasing them at Club Rush. This year’s Club Rush ran from Sept. 16 to 18, where 50-plus clubs came together by setting up tables at Plaza Vaquero to give students opportunities to meet new people by signing up for clubs that are of their interest. Food, music, and free prizes were also provided at Club Rush to welcome students for the new upcoming fall semester.
The atmosphere at Club Rush was lively and inviting, as students explored the variety of clubs offered to different interests and passions. From academic-focused clubs to social and cultural groups, there was something for everyone. Many students found themselves drawn to clubs that align with their hobbies or career aspirations, while others took the opportunity to try something new and step out of their comfort zones.
ASGCC students played a big part in forming this year’s club rush event. “We make this event every semester so all the clubs can advertise themselves. Clubs advertise through Instagram and create QR codes for students to join different clubs that interest them,” ASGCC member and second-year political science major Iren Abelian said. Even if students missed Club Rush, they can still be a part of these clubs by following their Instagram page to stay in touch with upcoming events.
Unfortunately, many students at GCC do not join clubs and choose to only focus on their academic goals. “Being involved on campus is very fun; some people just come to class and go home, and I think that joining clubs can help students meet new people that have the same interest and have a fun college experience because it helps them socialize,” ASGCC student Iren Abelian further suggested. It’s vital for students to maintain a balance between education and socializing, as this combination promotes connectivity between others and enhances their overall college experience.
The college experience is different for everyone, but events like Club Rush help students put themselves out there and connect with people that share similar aspirations, according to the organizers. First-year psychology major Sophia Lasaña says that “Club Rush taps into the diversity of a lot of different interests of students here.” Having diverse clubs is beneficial because it creates a community where everyone can be involved, according to the organizers. “Community is a big thing that we long for in life,” Sophia Lasaña further expressed. Lasaña’s experience highlights the importance of having spaces where students can find their calling and feel a sense of belonging. By participating in clubs, students not only pursue their interests but also build meaningful connections that can support their personal and academic growth throughout college.
