The word “mother” carries more than a definition. It represents comfort, strength, and a kind of love that shapes lives in lasting ways. Mother’s Day is not just another day on the calendar; it is a reminder to pause and recognize the women whose influence beyond what is seen.
Mother’s Day is a holiday that stands as a tribute to sacrifice, resilience, and unconditional love.
A mother often serves as a foundation for families. They are always guiding and supporting. Mothers teach lessons that extend far beyond.
Whether biological, adoptive, or chosen, mother figures leave a lasting impact that continues to shape identity, values, strength, perseverance, and direction.
At Glendale Community College, that influence is visible across campus. Many students balance academics with work and personal responsibilities often driven and encouraged by their mothers.
Others are mothers themselves, working toward degrees and raising children while demonstrating determination. They are navigating through the demands of higher learning. Their presence on campus reflects a different kind of strength. It is built on the desire to create better opportunities. Behind that persistence is a source of inspiration rooted in the support or example of a mother.
For some students, motherhood itself is part of that inspiration. Sarah Lee Samonte, a 43-year-old freshman majoring in child development and health care with a focus on children with disabilities, is balancing life as a full-time student, full-time special education lead at an elementary school, and a full-time mother.
“It’s a lot of work, time, dedication, and sacrifice,” Samonte said. “I’m a 43-year-old freshman and a full-time mother. I work full time, and I go to school full time as well. My friends and family say I am crazy. But my kids help drive me. They define the best parts of me.”
Samonte said returning to school has reminded her of her own strength and determination.
“Being a student at Glendale Community College has reminded me that I still have grit left in me,” she said. “My kids look at me like I am a superhero. Every day I wake up and look in the mirror and say it’s another day, and it’s going to be a good one.”
Her story reflects the perseverance of many student-parents who pursue higher education while caring for their families.
For those who have lost their mothers, Mother’s Day carries a different kind of meaning. It becomes a time of reflection as well as celebration. Revisiting memories or continuing traditions once cherished as ways to honor those amazing mothers. Their presence remains in the values instilled and the lives they shape.
In this fast paced and often demanding world, the everyday contributions of mothers can be overlooked. Their moments of emotional support, long hours of work, and their efforts that take place behind the scenes that go unnoticed.
Mother’s Day serves as an opportunity to slow down and acknowledge those contributions with genuine appreciation. It is about honoring a lasting influence; one that continues to inspire across time.
Long after the flowers have faded and the day has passed, it is the quiet moments that will remain. The echo of a voice offering comfort, the memory of hands that once held on a little tighter, and the lessons that still surface exactly when they are needed most. Whether a mother is near or gone, her love does not leave. It settles into the heart and becomes a part of who someone is and who they will become.
Happy Mother’s Day
