From Monterrey, Mexico to Los Angeles, California, Daniela Zavala has built a story that moves with grace, courage, and purpose.
Ever since she was a child, she dreamed of spending time in the United States. Drawn to its pop culture and lifestyle, she always imagined what it would feel like to experience it firsthand.
When the opportunity finally came to study in the U.S., Zavala knew she was ready to turn that dream into reality.
As a dancer, there was no better destination than Los Angeles. The city has long been a vibrant hub for artists, choreographers, and performers, a place where creativity and ambition intersect. For Zavala, it was the perfect stage to keep learning, growing, and connecting.
“I’ve had an incredible first year here,” she said, reflecting on the opportunities and friendships she has built through dance. “I couldn’t have picked a better place.”
Zavala is currently majoring in dance at Glendale Community College, where she has found both inspiration and community. She describes GCC as a beautiful campus filled with kind people and supportive staff.
One of her favorite parts of student life has been her role as a student worker in the Foundation Office. There, she gets to witness generosity firsthand, seeing donations pour in from people who believe deeply in the potential of GCC students.
“It’s really special to be surrounded by people who care about others’ futures,” she said.
Life in Los Angeles has also brought her balance. After moving closer to the beach this past summer, Zavala has found comfort in being near the water. She loves the contrast of peaceful coastal mornings with the energy of the bustling city, a mix that perfectly mirrors her dynamic spirit.
But the journey has not been without challenges. Moving to another country alone as a young adult has tested her resilience in countless ways. “It’s definitely been the hardest part,” she said. “There are so many things you have to learn to navigate on your own just to survive. But every challenge teaches you something valuable.”
For Zavala, dance remains both her compass and her language. Her goal is to use everything she has learned, both in movement and in life, to guide others, helping them connect with themselves through art and motion.
“I want to use all the tools I’ve acquired to coach people through life,” she said. “To help them move through it, literally and emotionally.”
Her advice for other international students comes from a place of deep experience and gratitude. “Enjoy every second. Take it all in. Let the difficult be difficult, and let the easy be easy,” she said. “The experience of being an international student will teach you more than anyone ever can.”
Through her journey, Zavala continues to prove that following your passion often means stepping into the unknown, but that is exactly where growth, art, and beauty begin to unfold.
