Cross Country runners Pilar Delgado and Ivan Alvarado were named WSC athletes of the year. Each had wins during the 2002 season, and also placed in the top five several times.
“I feel very happy and satisfied to have received this honor,” Delgado said. “At first it was perfect and I didn’t think there was much competition, but at the end it got hard.”
Delgado, who finished fourth at the State Championships, was also selected as a first team All-American.
Returning next year, the freshman’s main focus is to just keep on running. “I want to win, win, win.”
On the men’s team, Alvarado, who has never won the award, felt it was a big honor.
“I am proud of representing Glendale. We had a good season taking the conference, as well as third in Southern California and third in state,” he said.
Alvarado, who in the spring will continue his running at the University of Utah on a full scholarship, also earned second team All-American honors with a ninth place finish at the State Championships.
